I wasnât cut out for this.
We were hiking on a wooded trail north of Flagstaff near the Schultz Pass. The terrain was alpine and the air was crisp and fresh. The sun was making an otherwise chilly afternoon downright pleasant, and I even had to take my gloves off after ten minutes because my hands were no longer cold.
But aside from that, I was miserable. The hiking trail had been a steady incline from the moment we left the car. Every part of my body protested our actions. My ankles ached and my thighs burned. My pack dug into my shoulders and I was certain that a blister was forming between my toes. My back ached. I wanted to go home.
âHow much farther?â I asked.
Ahead of me, Logan grunted. âWeâve only gone half a mile. We still have two miles until we reach the peak.â
âFive miles. Ugh.â
âHalf of it is downhill!â Sandy chirped enthusiastically. She was leading the way ahead of Logan, and was as fresh as when we had started. âWonât that be nice? Getting all of the vertical gain out of the way at the beginning? Then the second half will be easy!â
âEasy,â I said. âRight.â
âYou need me to lead the way, G-unit?â Logan asked. The nickname came from the G in Girl Scout.
âNo.â
âYouâre slowing down, is all Iâm saying.â
âAm not!â she shot back.
âDonât. Encourage. Her,â I said between breaths. âSheâll just. Go faster.â
âGo faster?â Sandy called.
âNO! Youâre fine. At this. Pace.â I lowered my voice to mutter to myself, âTwo more miles.â That was less than the perimeter of my property. I could do that.
Logan stopped and waited for me to catch up. âDonât think about the distance. Youâll just drive yourself crazy.â
âEasier said. Than done.â
âLet your mind wander,â he insisted. âThink about the trees. And other happy things.â
We continued hiking. I thought about the things that made me happy: my dog shelter and all the dogs I was sending to good homes. How much money we had raised. Even though I still didnât have access to the accounts, I had a general idea based on each dayâs take. We had raised more money in the last three weeks than in all of last yearâs fundraiser.
I glanced ahead of me. Loganâs butt was at eye-level six feet away. That was a happy thing. The way his firm, muscular cheeks moved with each careful step. The rest of the chiseled man they were attached to.
The way Logan cradled me the other night while making love was another happy thing.
So was the way I hoped he would make love to me tonight.
The filthy things I wanted him to do to me.
Things we hadnât tried yet.
That distracted me for a little while longer. At least until a cramp formed in my side.
âCan we take a short break?â I asked.
Sandy stopped next to a fallen tree where we could sit. I plopped my butt down gratefully.
âThe altitudeâs tough,â Logan said.
âIâve lived here all my life,â I replied.
âOh.â He shrugged. âItâs still tough if youâre not used to hiking.
